Gryphon ringette women drop two in tournament

GUELPH — The Guelph Gryphons suffered a pair of losses on the opening day of the four-day University Challenge Cup of ringette Wednesday at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs were edged 4-3 by Dalhousie and 6-4 by Western.

The losses leave the Gryphs three points out of a place in a Tier One medal game. Top four of the field of nine at the completion of the round-robin preliminary round will gain a berth in a medal game Saturday.

Ottawa leads the standings at 3-0-0 while Dalhousie is second at 2-0-0. Western and Lethbridge are each at 1-0-1 while Calgary’s at 1-1-1 and Alberta’s at 0-1-1. Guelph, Brock and Carleton are tied at 0-2-0.

Ottawa defeated Alberta 5-4, Carleton 10-4 and Calgary 5-4 while Dalhousie also defeated Brock 6-4. Calgary dropped Brock 7-2 and tied Alberta 6-6 while Lethbridge defeated Carleton 9-6 and tied Western 6-6.

Thursday, the Gryphs are to play Lethbridge at 7:30 a.m., Calgary at 11 a.m. and Ottawa at 3:30 p.m.

Laurier leads the Tier Two standings at 2-0-0 and is followed by Nipissing at 1-0-1, McMaster at 0-1-1 and Trent at 0-2-0.
