Gryphon ringette women handed three more setbacks

GUELPH — The Guelph Gryphons were knocked out of medal contention Thursday with three losses at the University Challenge Cup of ringette at the Gryphon Centre.

The setbacks leave the Gryphs the lone winless team in the nine-team Tier One standings.

Thursday, the Gryphs were edged 3-2 by Lethbridge and dropped 5-0 by Calgary and 6-1 by Ottawa.

Lethbridge leads the standings at 4-0-1 and are followed by Ottawa at 4-1-0, Western at 3-0-1, Calgary at 3-1-1, Dalhousie at 2-3-0, Alberta at 1-2-1, Carleton at 1-3-0, Brock at 1-4-0 and Guelph at 0-5-0.

In other games Thursday, Lethbridge defeated Alberta 3-2 and Brock 10-6, Brock downed Ottawa 5-2, Calgary topped Dalhousie 7-3, Western defeated Dalhousie 4-1 and Brock 3-2, Alberta clipped Carleton 5-2 and Carleton dumped Dalhousie 8-2.

The Gryphs will wrap up their round-robin with three games Friday as they’re to play Carleton at 11:15 a.m., Alberta at 4:45 p.m. and Brock at 8:45 p.m.

The first- and second-place teams at the end of the round-robin are to meet in the gold-medal match Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The third- and fourth-place teams are to battle for bronze at 2 p.m.

Laurier remained undefeated in Tier Two with a 6-2 victory over Nipissing Thursday.

Laurier leads the standings at 3-0-0 while McMaster’s at 2-1-1, Nipissing’s at 1-2-1 and Trent’s at 0-3-0.

In other games Thursday, McMaster defeated Trent 9-3 and Nipissing 5-1.

All four teams advance to the tier’s medal games Saturday. The gold-medal match is set for 12:45 p.m. while the bronze-medal game is slated for 12 noon.
