Gryphon rugby men hold on to top McMaster
HAMILTON – The Guelph Gryphons grabbed an 18-point lead then held on to edge the McMaster Marauders 21-15 in OUA men’s rugby play Sunday at McMaster’s Back Ten Field.
The host Marauders struck for the opening points early in the game when Will Kelly kicked a penalty goal.
The Gryphs rallied to grab a lead they wouldn’t relinquish as Jordan Hofstra and Erich Milne scoring tries in the first half and John Sheridan adding a try early in the second half. Sheridan converted all three tries to put the Gryphs up 21-3.
However, McMaster came back with tries by Mike Smith and Graham Dobbs and a convert by Kelly to cut the margin to the final six points.
The result leaves the Gryphs at 3-0-0 and McMaster at 2-1-0.
The Gryphs are to host the Brock Badgers Saturday at Varsity Field starting at 6 p.m.
