Gryphon rugby women advance to national semifinal

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Guelph Gryphons turned it on in the second half to run to a 54-10 victory over the Victoria Vikes in quarter-final play Thursday at the U Sports national university women’s rugby championship tournament.

The Gryphs struck for 40 points in the second half while keeping the Vikes scoreless to turn a four-point lead at halftime into the final one-sided score.

Julia Schell, Alexandra Everett and Talia Hoffman each scored two tries for the Gryphs while Claire Traversa and Jasmine Ing added one apiece. Madison Brattan kicked seven conversions.

Gurp Dhaliwal had the lone try for Victoria while Maddy Aberg had a penalty kick and a conversion.

The OUA-champion Gryphs are the fourth seeds in the tournament while Canada West-finalist Victoria was seeded fifth. The Gryphs were 6-0 in OUA league and playoff play while Victoria was 4-3 in Canada West play.

The game had the largest margin of victory of any of Thursday’s quarter-finals. The other ones saw the top-seed Ottawa Gee-Gees edge the eight-seed Acadia Axewomen 26-24, second-seed St. Francis Xavier X-Women double seventh-seed Queen’s Gaels 42-21 and sixth-seed Laval Rouge et Or surprise third-seed Calgary Dinos 28-22.

With their win the Gryphs advance to play Ottawa in Friday’s championship semifinals. Game time is 5 p.m. StFX is to play Laval at 2:30 p.m.

Thursday’s losers are to play in Saturday’s consolation semifinals with Queen’s pitted against Calgary at 9:30 a.m. and Acadia against Victoria at 12 p.m.

Sunday’s schedule has the consolation final featuring Saturday’s winners at 9:30 a.m., the bronze-medal match with Friday’s losers at 12 p.m. and the gold-medal match with Friday’s winners at 2:30 p.m.
