Gryphon rugby women downed by Laval
LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – The OUA champion Guelph Gryphons were dropped into the consolation round of the U Sports national women’s rugby championship tournament Thursday when they were downed 35-5 by the fifth-seeded Laval Rouge et Or.
The Gryphs were seeded fourth.
Laval scored twice in the first five minutes of the game played during a snowstorm on a frozen, snow-covered field. The Rouge et Or led 28-0 at halftime.
The Gryphs cut the gap in the 40th minute on a try by April Wright, but Laval got that one back to complete the scoring seven minutes later.
Justine Pelletier led Laval with a pair of tries while Mariane Guilbault, Fabiola Forteza and Roxanne Angers each scored one try and Anne-Charlotte Beaulieau converted all five tries.
The Gryphs are to play the host Lethbridge Pronghorns in Friday’s consolation semifinals.
In other quarter-final games Thursday, top-seed and defending champion St. Francis Xavier X-Women downed eighth-seed Lethbridge 39-12, second-seed Ottawa Gee-Gees dropped seventh-seed Acadia Axewomen 65-5 and third-seed Calgary Dinos defeated sixth-seed Queen’s Gaels 41-5.
