Gryphon rugby women finish season with consolation semifinal win

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – The Guelph Gryphons completed their women’s rugby season with a 34-12 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Sunday in the U Sports championship tournament consolation semifinals.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday, but poor weather conditions forced the postponement of all games that day. With the game being moved to Sunday, no consolation final was held.

Playing in cold weather and with snow on the field, the Gryphs jumped to a quick lead that they wouldn’t relinquish, Guelph led 15-5 at halftime and 20-12 with 20 minutes to play before they added two more tries two minutes apart to finalize the scoring.

Madison Brattan, Emilie Nicole, Taylor Durham, Julia Schell, Emily Samek and Rebecca Sundell each scored a try for the Gryphs. Schell and Jasmine Ing each kicked a convert.

Hannah Lopez and Sarah Gordon had one try each for Lethbridge while Caitlin Sears added the convert.

The Ottawa Gee-Gees won the gold-medal game 20-10 over the Laval Rouge et Or while the St. Francis Xavier X-Women took the bronze-medal match 22-12 over the Calgary Dinos.
