Gryphon rugby women lock up first in Shiels

HAMILTON – The Guelph Gryphons secured a first-place finish in the OUA women’s rugby league’s Shiels Division with a 35-19 victory over the McMaster Marauders Friday night at McMaster.

The win also completed an undefeated run through the Ontario league’s regular season and home-field advantage however long the Gryphs survive in the playoffs.

The Gryphs jumped into a 14-7 lead by the end of the first half and extended their lead with two more tries by the midway point of the second half.

Julia Schell accounted for 15 of Guelph’s points with a try and five conversions while Zana Everett added a pair of tries. Getting one try apiece were Brodie Schmidt and Madison Brattan.

Khadijah Brouilette, Maddie Cohoon and Britni French each had try for McMaster.

The game decided first place in the Shiels Division as both teams entered the match with 3-0 records and both were already assured of byes in the quarter-finals that are to be held on the Thanksgiving weekend.

This year the top four teams in the Shiels Division will be joined by the top two from the Russell Division in the league’s quarter-finals. The two in the Shiels get byes in the quarter-finals while the other two Shiels teams will host quarter-final matches.

Saturday’s quarter-finals will pit the Brock Badgers (first in Russell at 4-0) against the York Lions (fourth in Shiels at 1-3) in one game while the Queen’s Gaels (third in Shiels at 2-2) are to play the Trent Excalibur (second in Russell at 3-1) in the other.

The semifinals are to be played Oct. 14 with the Gryphs hosting the lowest-ranked quarter-final winner.

The championship game is to be played Oct. 21 at the home of the highest-ranked semifinal winner.

The semifinal winners also gain berths in the U Sports championship tournament that is to be played at Lethbridge, Alta., Nov. 2 to 5.
