Gryphon rugby women national silver medalists

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Guelph Gryphons finished as silver medalists at the U Sports university women’s rugby’s national championship tournament.

The fourth-seed Gryphons suffered a 41-24 loss to the second-seed St. Francis Xavier X-Women in the Monilex Trophy final.

The difference in the game was its middle stages when the X-Women connected for five of the six tries scored from the game’s 23rd minute to its 69th minute. That turned a 14-7 lead for the Gryphs into a 36-19 advantage for StFX.

Julia Schell, Erika Barton, Rebecka Sundell and Brodie Schmidt each scored a try for the Gryphs while Madison Brattan kicked two conversions.

Sam Lake had three tries for StFX and Joanna Alphonso, Oliva DeMerchant and Amelia Hatfield added one apiece. Daniella Franada kicked a penalty goal and four conversions.

Kylie Shaughnessy of the Gryphs and Hatfield of the X-Women were picked as their team’s players of the game.

DeMerchant was named the MVP of the tournament while Emilie Nicholl and Alexandra Everett of the Gryphs were named to the tournament’s all-star team. Honoured from StFX were DeMerchant, Alphonso, Hatfield and Franada.

Others names to the all-star team were Ellen Murphy of the Ottawa Gee-Gees, Jan-Ma Letinois and Nele Pien of the Laval Rouge et Or, Sophie de Goede and Nadia Popov of the Queen’s Gaels, Sasha Guedes and Maddy Aberg of the Victoria Vikes, Taejah Thompson of the Calgary Dinos and Gillian Bergsma of the Acadia Axewomen.

The Gryphs defeated the fifth-seed Victoria Vikes 54-10 in Thursday’s quarter-finals and the top-seed Ottawa Gee-Gees 15-12 in Friday’s semifinals to gain their berth in the final.

The championship win was the sixth for StFX and kept their trend of winning it in every even-numbered year starting in 2010.

The Gryphs were looking for their third national title and first since 2011.
