Gryphon rugby women top Queen’s to open their season
KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA women’s rugby season with a 39-34 victory over the Queen’s Gaels Saturday at Nixon Field.
The Gryphs built a 24-point lead in the first half, then held on for the victory.
Brodie Schmidt led the Gryphs with two tries while April Wright, Erika Barton, Amara Hill, Rebecka Sundell and Emily Frasson added single tries.
Guelph led 29-5 at the half before Rachel Hickson of the Gaels helped bring the hosts close as she scored four tries for Queen’s. Nadia Popov and Sophie de Goede had one try apiece.
The defending OUA champion Gryphs entered the match ranked seventh in the country while Queen’s, last year’s finalists, was ranked fourth.
Next up for the Gryphs is a match against the Western Mustangs at London Friday at 7 p.m.
After that the Gryphons have home games against the York Lions Sept. 22 and McMaster Marauders Sept. 29 to wrap up their regular season.
