Gryphon soccer men strike early for win over Algoma

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons struck for three goals in the first half as they bounced back from last weekend’s loss to the McMaster Marauders with a 4-1 win over the Algoma Thunderbirds Saturday.

Mitchell Lefebvre, Ian Vidovich, Jace Kotsopoulos and Peter Zehdee scored a goal apiece for the Gryphs while Calvin Witzell had two assists and Johnson Amoo had one.

Dylan Rennie scored for Algoma.

The Gryphs outshot Algoma 23-11.

Guelph goalkeepers Braden Taylor and Simon Norgrove played one half apiece. Andrew Johnstone played 68 minutes in net for Algoma while Tanvir Grewal played 22.

The Gryphs lead the West Division at 5-1-1 while Algoma is ninth at 1-4-0.

Guelph and Algoma are to meet again Sunday at Sault Ste. Marie at 2 p.m.
