Gryphon soccer women double Windsor

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons fired home three goals in the second half to finish their OUA women’s soccer league’s regular season with a 4-2 victory over the Windsor Lancers Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The teams had been tied 1-1 at the end of the first half, Windsor scoring in the second minute and Guelph responding in the 13th minute.

The Gryphs jumped ahead for good with goals in the 51st and 58th minutes before Windsor cut the gap to a single goal in the 70th minute. The hosts restored their two-goal advantage two minutes later.

Danielle Sauve had a pair of goals for the Gryphs while Hayley Howes and Venessa Mazur added single goals. Tori Hinchliffe and Jacquie Preza each had an assist.

Giulia Barile and Jazmin Martin scored for Windsor.

The Lancers took 14 shots with 10 reaching the net while the Gryphs took nine shots with only one being off target. Libby Brenneman made eight saves in the Guelph net.

The Gryphs had locked up a second-place finish in the West Division before the match. They finish with a 10-4-2 record, will get a bye in Wednesday’s first round of the playoffs and host a quarter-final match Saturday against the highest-ranked West first-round winner for a berth in the league’s Final Four Nov. 3 and 4.
