Gryphon soccer women dropped by Western

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons yielded three goals in the second half as they suffered a 5-2 loss to the Western Mustangs in OUA women’s soccer league play Saturday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Western opened the battle of the top two teams in the West Division with a pair of goals in the first half and the Mustangs outscored the Gryphs 3-2 in the second half.

Kaylin Twardowski and Jacqueline Goulart had a goal apiece for the Gryphs while Sydney Johnson picked up an assist.

Julia Crnjac and Giulia Geraci scored twice each for Western while Kendra Marlatt had the other goal and Jessica Vieira had an assist.

Western took 14 shots during the game while the Gryphs took three, all in the second half.

Brooke Davidson took the loss in the Guelph net although she made six saves. Megan Girardi started in net for Western and was replaced for the final nine minutes by Breanne Carreiro.

The game was the final one of the regular season for Western. The Mustangs finish first in the West Division at 14-1-1.

The loss dropped the Gryphs to 9-4-2 with a game to go Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex against the Windsor Lancers (3-4-8).

The Gryphs are assured of a second-place finish in the West and, like Western, will get a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
