Gryphon soccer women, Laurier in scoreless tie

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons and Laurier Golden Hawks battled to a scoreless draw in OUA women’s soccer play Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Laurier outshot the Gryphs 8-6 while the Gryphs took eight of the 11 corner kicks taken during the match.

Libby Brenneman picked up the shutout for Guelph, her sixth of the season.

Ashley Almeida collected the shutout for Laurier, her third of the season.

The Gryphs have the second-best goals-against average in the 19-team league as they’ve allowed four goals in 11 games for a 0.364 average. Western Mustangs have the lowest average at 0.182.

Every game the Gryphs have played in the regular season has ended with a shutout for either the Gryphs or their opponents – or both. Two of the games ended in scoreless ties while six wins were all by shutouts and they were also shut out in their three losses.

Guelph and Laurier are tied for second in the West Division with 20 points apiece. The Gryphs have a game in hand on the Golden Hawks (5-2-5). Western (10-1-0) leads the division.

The Gryphs are to play the Brock Badgers (4-4-3) at Brock Friday at 6 p.m., the first of five games remaining on their regular-season schedule.
