Gryphon soccer women secure second-place finish

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons scored a pair of goals in the first half to drop the Waterloo Warriors 2-0 in OUA women’s soccer play Wednesday night at Waterloo’s Warrior Field.

Guelph native Sydney Johnson scored both goals as she hit in the 28th and 33rd minutes.

Libby Brenneman made four saves for the shutout.

The result leaves the Gryphs assured of a second-place finish in the West Division. They’re at 9-3-2 with two games to go while Waterloo is fourth at 6-4-5.

The Gryphs are to complete their regular season with 1 p.m. games at the Gryphon Soccer Complex this weekend. They’re to play the division-leading Western Mustangs (13-1-1) Saturday and the sixth-place Windsor Lancers (3-4-7) Sunday.

By finishing second, the Gryphs will get a bye in the first round of the playoffs and they’ll host a league quarter-final.
