Gryphon softball women slip by York

MAPLE – The Guelph Gryphons edged the York Lions 7-6 in the second game of their Ontario Intercollegiate Women’s Fastpitch Association doubleheader at Maple Community Centre Park for their first victory of the season following three close losses.

The Gryphs had dropped the opening game of the twinbill 7-3 and had lost both games of a doubleheader in Kingston Saturday when they were defeated 6-5 and 6-4 to the Queen’s Gaels.

The local squad was to have opened its season Friday night at home with a doubleheader against the McMaster Marauders, but those games were cancelled when McMaster pulled out of the league.

The Gryphs also had a home doubleheader against the Waterloo Warriors scheduled for Sept. 24 cancelled when Waterloo withdrew from the league.

The Gryphs will be in Ottawa next weekend for a pair of doubleheaders as they’re to play the Carleton Ravens Friday at 7 p.m. and the Ottawa Gee-Gees Sunday at 11 a.m.
