Gryphon volleyball men sweep Western in opener

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA men’s volleyball league’s regular season with a 3-0 sweep of the Western Mustangs Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs won 25-21, 25-18, 25-16.

Guelph had 24 kills to 20 for Western and had 11 blocks, six more than Western. The Mustangs committed 30 errors while the Gryphs had 12.

Matthew Baxter led the Gryphs with eight kills, three digs, two blocks and an ace while Zachary Newman had six kills, three digs, two blocks and an ace. Jackson Paterson followed with four blocks, two kills and an ace while Sam Nothnagel had three kills, three blocks and an ace, Josh Green had five kills and four digs, Sam Kloke had 22 assists, two aces and two digs and Kaj Wigston had five digs.

Chris Newcombe had five kills, two aces, two blocks and two digs for Western while Evan Hammond had four kills, two aces, two digs and a block, Evan Cranshaw had four kills, a block and a dig, Bryn Ramsay had four kills and three digs and Matt Hooker had 17 assists, five digs, a kill and a block.

The Gryphs are at home again Saturday when they’re to host the Windsor Lancers (1-0) at 8 p.m.
