Gryphon volleyball women downed by Ryerson
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons completed the 2017 portion of their OUA women’s volleyball league season with a 3-1 loss to the unbeaten Ryerson Rams Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
The eighth-ranked Rams won 22-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-17.
The Gryphs jumped ahead early in the first set, but needed a late flurry to post the win. Guelph was also ahead early in the second set before a 17-5 run by the Rams put them in control. Ryerson’s run in the third set came earlier as they turned a one-point deficit into a nine-point advantage with a 12-2 run. The fourth-set run came right from the start as the Rams jumped into a 12-4 lead and never trailed in the set.
Lisa Wedel had eight kills, two aces, three digs and two blocks for Guelph while Michaela Hellinga had eight kills, an assist, six digs and two blocks. Jessica Gormley followed with five kills, two aces, three digs and two blocks while Jessica Chung had seven kills and six digs. Alex Curran had a kill, 27 assists and six digs while Kayla McMullen had an assist and eight digs.
Laura Veltman had 19 kills, two assists, two aces, nine digs and a block for Ryerson while Theanna Vernon had 14 kills, two digs and five blocks and Janelle Albert had nine kills, an assist, an ace and 12 digs. Lindsay Kleuskens had five kills, an ace, three digs and four blocks and Kate McIlmoyle had a kill, 46 assists and 11 digs.
The loss was the third in a row for the Gryphs who enter the exam and Christmas break seventh in the West Division at 1-8. The Rams have won all seven of their matches.
Next game for the Gryphs is a home contest against the Lakehead Thunderwolves (3-4) Jan. 12 at the GGAC at 6 p.m.
