Gryphon volleyball women edged by top-ranked Toronto

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons wrapped up their regular season in the OUA women’s volleyball league with a 3-2 loss to the undefeated Toronto Varsity Blues.

Toronto won 25-27, 25-16, 25-7, 18-25, 15-8.

It was the third 3-2 win of the season for top-ranked Toronto who also won by that score over the Ryerson Rams and the eighth-ranked McMaster Marauders.

Jessica Gormley had eight kills, one ace, four digs and six blocks for the Gryphs while Victoria Golebiowski had 11 kills and 19 digs, Libby Donevan had six kills, two aces, four digs and three blocks, Michaela Hellinga had six kills, one ace, 10 digs and three blocks, Maddie Dedecker had five kills, one assist, one ace, 18 digs and one block, Cayte Wilson had three kills, 28 assists, 14 digs and one block and Kayla McMullen had two assists and 22 digs.

Alina Dormann had 14 kills, two assists, two aces, 16 digs and three blocks for Toronto while Anna Licht had 12 kills, one dig and four blocks, Anna Feore had 12 kills, two assists, one ace, 20 digs and one block, Emma Armstrong had 10 kills, one ace and 15 digs, Veronica Derylo had five kills, two aces, 12 digs and three blocks and Madelyn Mandryk had 41 assists, three aces, 22 digs and four blocks.

The Gryphs finish third in the West Division at 12-7 while Toronto finished first in the East at 19-0.

Guelph will play the Ryerson Rams, second in the East at 15-4, at Ryerson in the quarter-finals. That match is slated for Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Gryphs and Rams met twice this season. Guelph won 3-2 Oct. 7 in the McMaster Thanksgiving Classic and Ryerson won 3-1 Feb. 17 in league play.

This is the fourth consecutive year the Gryphs have qualified for the playoffs.
