Gryphons advance to their 10th straight OUA field hockey final
LONDON — The Guelph Gryphons squeezed by the Western Mustangs Saturday to advance to Sunday’s OUA field hockey championship game.
Saturday’s win also gave the Gryphons a berth in the national U Sports field hockey championship tournament next weekend at Toronto.
Olivia Lane, this year’s OUA MVP, scored a second-half goal to give the Gryphs a 1-0 win over host Western. Morgan Kelley picked up the shutout.
Guelph moves on to play the Toronto Varsity Blues in the final. Toronto advanced to the final with a 5-1 victory over the Waterloo Warriors in the other semifinal.
The Gryphs and Varsity Blues split their two regular-season meetings as Guelph won 4-3 Sept. 24 and Toronto prevailed 3-2 Oct. 20.
It’ll be the 10th consecutive appearance by the Gryphs in the OUA final and their ninth against Toronto in that stretch. They’ve won three of those championship-game meetings with the Varsity Blues as they claimed the title in 2007, 2009 and 2010.
The Gryphs also won the OUA crown in 2014 when they defeated Waterloo 4-1.
Game time Sunday at Western’s TD Stadium is 3 p.m.
