Gryphons come back for berth in Yates Cup game

OTTAWA – A touchdown by fifth-year receiver Thomas Bresciani the final minute of their semifinal Saturday gave the Guelph Gryphons a berth in next week’s OUA football Yate Cup championship game.

Bresciani’s touchdown on a 59-yard pass from quarterback Theo Landers and the convert by Gabe Ferraro gave the Gryphs a 27-22 come-from-behind victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Gee-Gees Field.

All of Guelph’s points were scored in the second half, 17 of them coming in the fourth quarter and 10 of them in the final five minutes.

Ottawa had scored 10 points in the first quarter and eight in the second quarter before the Gryphs cut the gap to 22-10 by the end of the third quarter thanks to a 28-yard TD run by Landers, and a convert and 36-yard field goal by Ferraro.

Ferraro added a single point on a rouge in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.

Jean-Paul Cimankinda bulled his way into the Ottawa end zone on a one-yard plunge a little over five minutes later, but Guelph’s two-point attempt was intercepted by the Gee-Gees.

Ferraro’s 35-yard field goal with 4:47 to go cut the gap to two points, setting the stage for the winning touchdown.

Dawson Odei had two TDs for Ottawa as he scored on a five-yard run late in the first quarter and on an eight-yard run in the final minute of the first half.

All of the other points for the Gee-Gees were scored by kicker Raphael Cote who connected on two 39-yard field goals and scored two rouges and two converts.

The Gryphs, who have won five OUA games in a row – the final three of the regular season and two playoff matches – are to play the Western Mustangs in Saturday’s Yates Cup game. The Mustangs, who have won 19 consecutive OUA games, defeated the Carleton Ravens 39-13 at London’s TD Stadium in Saturday’s other semifinal.

Western’s last loss in OUA play was the 2016 Yates Cup final when they were edged 43-40 by the Laurier Golden Hawks.

Guelph and Western never played each other in this year’s regular season.

The last time they met was in last year’s semifinal when they were downed 66-12 by the Mustangs.

It’ll be Guelph’s first appearance in the championship match since they defeated Western 23-17 in the 2015 Yates Cup final at London.
