Gryphons host University Challenge Cup of Ringette
GUELPH — The Guelph Gryphons are hosting the University Challenge Cup of Ringette this week at the Gryphon Centre.
Play was to start Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. in the four-day tournament.
A total of 13 schools are represented with the Gryphons being in the top level Tier One along with eight others — Alberta, Brock, Calgary, Carleton, Dalhousie, Lethbridge, Ottawa and Western.
Competing in Tier Two are Laurier, McMaster, Nipissing and Trent.
Tier One features round-robin preliminary play with the top four teams advancing to the medal games. The first- and second-placed teams are to meet in the gold-medal game at 2:30 p.m. while the third- and fourth-placed teams are to battle in the bronze-medal game at 2 p.m.
Tier Two features a double round-robin preliminary round and all four teams advance to Saturday’s medal games. The gold-medal game is set for 12:45 p.m. while the bronze-medal game is to go at 12 noon.
In the Tier One round-robin, the Gryphons are to play Dalhousie Wednesday at 8:45 a.m., Western Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., Lethbridge Thursday at 7:30 a.m., Calgary Thursday at 11 a.m., Ottawa Thursday at 3:30 p.m., Carleton Friday at 11:15 a.m., Alberta Friday at 4:45 p.m. and Brock Friday at 8:45 p.m.
The Gryphs won the 2014 Tier Two championship when the tournament was hosted by Nipissing. The locals won all seven games they played, outscoring their opponents 40-6 in the process.
They moved to Tier One the following year when the tournament was hosted by Calgary and lost all seven games they played. The Guelph side was outscored 43-19 in the tournament.
The Gryphs didn’t compete in last year’s tournament which was also hosted by Calgary.
The Gryphs also won Tier Two silver in both 2013 and 2012.
