Gryphons oust Ottawa from football playoffs

OTTAWA – The Guelph Gryphons jumped ahead early and didn’t let the Ottawa Gee-Gees get any comeback thoughts as they captured a 30-8 victory in OUA football quarter-final play Saturday at Gee-Gees Stadium.

The Gryphs struck for two touchdowns and two field goals in the first quarter to grab control of the game early.

The match marked the return of quarterback James Roberts who played in his first game since being sidelined in the Homecoming loss to the McMaster Marauders.

In his first quarter back, Roberts threw a pair of TD tosses as he hit Jacob Scarfone for 31 yards on a scoring play 10 minutes into the game and Jordan Terrio on a 10-yard scoring play four and a half minutes later.

As has become the case this season, Gabe Ferraro accounted for most of the points or the Gryphs as he converted both touchdowns, kicked field goals of 18, 22, 19, 23 and 47 yards and also booted a rouge.

Guelph’s defence kept Ottawa out of their end zone. Lewis Ward kicked field goals of 22 and 18 yards in the second quarter and the Gryphons conceded a safety early in the fourth quarter.

In his return, Roberts completed 10 of 19 pass attempts for 147 yards and the two touchdowns. He was intercepted once.

Johnny Augustine had another big ground game as he carried the ball 21 times for 151 yards. Brandon Gordon had 80 yards on 12 carries.

Scarfone caught five passes for 83 yards and returned nine punts for 93 yards and Terrio caught two passes for 41 yards.

On defence, Job Reinhart had eight solo tackles and Luke Korol had six solo and three assisted tackles. The Gryphon defence had six sacks. Reinhart forced a fumble recovered by Derek Drouillard and the Gryphs had four breakups.

Ottawa had won the season-opening game against the Gryphs 24-21 in double overtime at Alumni Stadium Aug. 27.

With the quarter-final victory, the Gryphs advance to play the Western Mustangs in the semifinals Saturday at London’s TD Stadium where the Gryphs suffered a 41-34 loss in OT Sept. 4.

Game time Saturday is 1 p.m. according to Western’s website.

Winner advances to the OUA championship Yates Cup game Nov. 11.
