Gryphs fourth in Tier 2, Calgary wins Tier 1 gold
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons finished the Canadian University Challenge Cup ringette tournament fourth in Tier 2.
The Gryphs suffered a 9-4 loss to the Nipissing Lakers in the tier’s bronze-medal match at the Gryphon Centre Sunday. Nipissing had also won bronze last year.
Guelph competed in the bronze game being blanked 4-0 by the Laurier Golden Hawks in a semifinal match earlier in the day.
Laurier advanced to the gold-medal match which they won 6-4 over the Brock Badgers thanks to a pair of goals late in the second half of a close contest. Laurier had been edged in a shootout in the tier’s gold-medal match last year.
Brock had outlasted Nipissing 10-8 in the semifinals.
The Calgary Dinos won the Tier 1 gold-medal match 6-0 over the defending champion Ottawa Gee-Gees while the Carleton Ravens edged the Dalhousie Tigers 5-4 in the tier’s bronze-medal game.
Calgary had finished fourth last year when the tournament was also held at the Gryphon Centre. That finish ended a streak of four consecutive medal wins for the Dinos as they had defeated Ottawa in the 2016 final and won bronze in 2015, silver in 2014 and bronze in 2013.
