Guelph Hurricanes shut out by Elmira

GUELPH — The Guelph Hurricanes yielded three goals in the third period as they suffered a 4-0 loss to the Elmira Sugar Kings in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Sleeman Centre.

Jonathan Reinhart made 23 saves to pick up his third shutout of the season and to hand the Canes their second shutout loss of the campaign.

Ethan Skinner did most of the damage for Elmira as he hit for a natural hat trick. He opened the scoring with a short-handed goal late in the second period and followed that with a pair of goals just over four minutes apart in the third period. Zack Cameron scored the other goal with 4:30 to go.

Kristian Hufsky faced 28 shots in the Guelph net.

Neither team scored on their power plays and the Canes had nine, Elmira five.

With seven games to go in the regular season, the Canes are eighth in the Midwestern Conference at 13-27-2-1. The top seven have clinched playoff berths and eighth is the highest the Canes could finish, which would likely mean a divisional quarter-final playoff series with either the Listowel Cyclones (31-7-1-2) or Elmira (32-9-1-0). The Canes lost 4-2 to the Listowel Cyclones at Listowel Friday night.

However, the Kitchener Dutchmen (27-13-2-2), Cambridge Winter Hawks (27-13-0-2) and Waterloo Siskins (22-15-1-4) can still mathematically finish first in the conference.

Next up for the Canes is a game against the Stratford Warriors (20-19-0-3) Friday at Stratford’s Allman Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
