Guelph Regals doubled by Niagara

GUELPH – The Guelph Regals’ winless streak in the Ontario junior B lacrosse league hit 11 games Friday night when they were doubled 8-4 by the Niagara Thunderhawks at the Victoria Road arena.

The Regals have 10 losses and a tie since their last victory, a 16-10 win over the Point Edward Pacers at Point Edward May 5.

Friday, the game was close until the third period when Niagara scored four unanswered goals. The Thunderhawks had led 3-2 at the end of the first and the score was tied 4-4 at the end of the second.

Jayden Bushey had a goal and two assists for the Regals while Mitchell Zulian, Shane Halliwell and Tyler Dunk also scored and Liam Holwell and Caleb Commandant each had an assist.

Kent Baker-Printup hit for a pair of goals for Niagara while singletons were rifled home by Chris Weier, Connor Watson, David Moyett, Evan Miller, Nathan Maloney and Saul Vanderzalm. Sebastian Reynolds, Moyett and Zach Luis each had two assists while goaltender Keelan Buis, Weier, Maloney, Reid Lowe and Baker-Printup had one apiece.

Niagara outshot the Regals 60-44 and the Thunderhawks went 2-for-7 on their power play while the Regals went 1-for-7.

Chris Wood made 52 saves but was charged with the loss in the Guelph net while Buis was the winner for Niagara with 40 saves.

The loss means the Regals will be knocked out of the playoff race with one more loss. They’re at 3-13-1 while Niagara improves to 8-9-0.

The Regals have three games left on their schedule, all home games, starting with a match against the Owen Sound North Stars (5-10-1) Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Victoria Road arena.
