Guelph Storm dumped by London Knights

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm surrendered three goals in each of the first two periods as they were thumped 8-1 by the London Knights in OHL play Sunday at the Sleeman Centre.

London led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 6-1 after the second.

James McEwen scored the lone goal for the Storm at 14:11 of the first period. That goal, assisted by Ryan Merkley and Nate Schnarr, tied the score 1-1 at the time.

The Knights scored the go-ahead goal less than a minute and a half later.

Sam Miletic had two goals for London while the other goals were scored by Liam Foudy, Robert Thomas, Cliff Pu, Mitchell Stephens, Janne Kuokkanan and Dante Salituro. J.J. Piccinich had three assists and Kuokkanen and Victor Mete had two apiece.

London outshot the Storm 31-30 and went 1-for-2 on the power play while the Storm was 1-for-4 on their power play.

Tyler Johnson picked up the win in net for the Knights while Anthony Popovich took the loss for the Storm He was replaced by Liam Herbst for the third period. Popovich faced 21 shots, Herbst 10.

The Storm has 10 games to go in its regular season and stands 10th in the Western Conference at 20-33-3-2. Any combination of wins by the Sarnia Sting and losses by the Storm adding to three will eliminate the Guelph squad from the playoff race.

The Storm is to play the Kitchener Rangers at Kitchener Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
