Guelph Storm gives up two in third as Spirit prevails

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm surrendered a pair of goals early in the third period to fall 3-2 to the Saginaw Spirit in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The Storm had led 1-0 at the end of the first period and 3-2 after the second.

Isaac Ratcliffe and Cedric Ralph scored the goals for Guelph while assists were awarded to James McEwan, Nate Schnarr, Ryan Merkley and Albert Michnac.

Kris Bennett had scored in the second period for Saginaw and Hayden Hodgson tied the score with a power-play goal at 5:18 of the third. Filip Hronek fired in the winner for the Spirit at 8:12 of the third.

Saginaw outshot Guelph 29-26 and went 1-for-5 on the power play while the Storm went 1-for-6.

Anthony Popovich took the loss for Guelph while Evan Cormier picked up the win for Saginaw.

The Storm suited up 16 players for the game as injuries and suspensions to Matt Hotchkiss (two games) and Givani Smith (one) picked up in the loss to the London Knights at London Thursday left the locals without the services of five veterans.

Guelph is at 20-37-4-2 and will finish 10th in the Western Conference. Saginaw kept its slim playoff hopes alive with the win. The Spirit has four games to play and trails the Sarnia Sting by six points.

The Storm has five games to go in its season as the locals have been knocked out of the playoff race. They’re to host London Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
