Guelphites help Gryphon soccer women win
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons received a goal in each half from a Guelph native as they downed the York Lions 2-0 in OUA women’s soccer play Wednesday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
Sydney Johnson’s goal in the 18th minute proved to be the winner while Tori Hinchliffe added the other goal in the 71st minute. Johnson’s goal was the second of her rookie season while Hinchliffe’s goal was the first of her second season with the Gryphs.
Alyssa Hodgson and Alana MacLean picked up assists.
Libby Brenneman made two saves for the clean sheet for the Gryphs, her fifth shutout of the season. She had 10 last year.
Taylor Grant took the loss in net for the Lions.
York outshot the Gryphs 6-4, both teams hitting the net with half their shots, and the hosts had five corner kicks to four for York.
The Gryphs vaulted back into the lead of the West Division at 6-2-1. They’re one point ahead of the Western Mustangs who have two games in hand and are at 6-1-0. Windsor Lancers are third at 3-2-4. York is eighth at 1-5-2.
Next up for the Gryphs is a match Sunday at 1 p.m. against the fourth-place Waterloo Warriors (3-1-3) at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
