Guelph’s Ashlan Best claims national junior 200m title

EDMONTON — Ashlan Best of the Speed River Track and Field Club is the Canadian junior women’s 200 metres champion.

Best claimed the title Sunday at the Canadian Track and Field Championships and Rio Trials at Foote Field that also included the national junior championships.

She took the title by winning the final with a time of 24.28 seconds. Natassha McDonald of Brampton was second in 24.36 seconds and Speed River clubmate Nicole Smith, who also competes for the University of Guelph Gryphons, was third in 24.75 seconds.

The victory made Best a double medal winner at the meet as she had earlier finished third in the 400m.

Sevanne Ghazarian of Speed River was fifth in the junior women’s 3,000m as she was clocked at nine minutes, 49.54 seconds. Shona McCulloch of Nepean won in 9:43.86 while Speed River’s Danielle Jossinet, another Gryphon, was 10th in 9:58.01.

Hailey Hitchings of the Gryphons was sixth in the junior women’s 100m hurdles. She was timed in 14.29 seconds while Mariam Abdul-Rashid of Oshawa won in 13.72 seconds.
