Ashlan Best sixth in 200m at world U20 meet

BYDGOSZCZ, Poland — Guelph’s Ashlan Best finished sixth in the women’s 200 metres final at the world under-20 track and field championships Saturday.

The Speed River Track and Field Club runner recorded a time of 23.68 seconds while Edidiong Ofonime Odiong of Bahrain won in 22.84 seconds.

Best qualified for the final by finishing second in her semifinal with a clocking of 23.66 seconds Friday. She was third in her heat earlier Friday with a personal best time of 23.61 seconds.

Best also competed in the 400m but didn’t qualify for the final despite recording a personal best time of 53.27 seconds in finishing fifth in her semifinal. Top two in each of three semifinals plus the next two fastest qualified for the final. She had been third in her heat in the first round at 54.47 seconds.

Clubmate Mark Patton also competed for Canada at the meet and was 10th in his heat of the men’s 1,500m in a time of 3:50.15. Top three in each of the three heats and the next three fastest qualified for the final.
