Guelph’s Gunnar Sales third in class in non-Olympic trials

GUELPH – Gunnar Sales of the Guelph Wrestling Club placed third in the men’s 70 kilogram class Friday in the Canadian world team non-Olympic weight class trials at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.

Sales was the lone Guelph wrestler entered in the tournament, the first of three in three days at the GGAC.

The meet is used to select the members of Canada’s world championship team in the weight classes that are not contested at the Olympics.

Haislan Garcia of Team Impact took top spot in the class while Vince De Marinis of Montreal Wrestling Club was second. Fourth went to Omar Ahmed of Hamilton Wrestling Club, fifth to Caleb Rutner of London-Western Wrestling Club and sixth went to former GWC member Cruiz Manning who’s now with the Brock Wrestling Club.

Other class winners were Scott Schiller of Montreal Wrestling Club (men’s 61), Jasmit Singh Phulka of Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club (men’s 79), Hunter Lee of Saskatoon Wrestling Club (men’s 92), Jade Parsons of Brock WC (women’s 55), Linda Morais of Montreal WC (women’s 59), Danielle Lappage of Calgary (women’s 65) and Justina Di Stasio of BMWC (women’s 72).

The wrestling at the GGAC is to continue with the international Canada Cup senior tournament Saturday and the Ontario Open junior tournament Sunday.
