Hurricanes toppled by Elmira Sugar Kings
ELMIRA – The Elmira Sugar Kings struck for three goals in the first and third periods as they downed the Guelph Hurricanes 7-2 in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Sunday at the Dan Snyder Memorial Arena.
With the win the Sugar Kings secured home-ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs as they’ll finish either third or fourth in the Midwestern Conference.
The game could also have been a playoff preview as the teams will meet if Elmira finishes third and the Canes finish sixth. Elmira (26-21-0-0) is fourth, two points behind the third-place Waterloo Siskins (25-18-1-3) while the Canes (12-29-1-6) are seventh, one point behind the sixth-place Brantford 99ers (13-28-2-4) and two ahead of the eighth-place Brampton Bombers (14-31-1-0).
Elmira led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 4-2 after the second.
Matthew Chard and Payton McLeish scored power-play goals for the Canes while assists were awarded to Aiden Matekovic, Niki Molson and Anthony Mota.
The Sugar Kings received goals from Ethan Wiseman, Ethan Skinner, Zack Cameron, Ryan Takamatsu, Jeremey Goodwin, Alex Peterson and Tyler Beauparlant. Takamatsu and Cameron collected two assists apiece while Braydon Munn, Harrison Toms, Damian Figueira and Skinner had one each.
The Sugar Kings had as many shots on goal in the third period (16) as the Canes did in the entire game. Elmira had 40 for the game.
Jet Greaves was tagged with the loss. He made 33 saves while winning goalkeeper Tyler Mazzocato made 14.
Guelph went 2-for-6 on its power play while Elmira went 2-for-8.
The Canes have two games left in their regular season and they can finish anywhere from sixth to eighth. The sixth-place finisher will play either Elmira or Waterloo in the conference quarter-finals while the seventh-place finisher will play the Stratford Warriors (35-10-1-1) and the eighth-place finisher will play the Listowel Cyclones (40-5-0-1).
The Canes are to play Brampton Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Brampton Memorial Arena and host Stratford Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
