It’s your week if Gryphons-Badgers’ hockey is your thing

GUELPH – Are you ready for some Guelph Gryphons-Brock Badgers OUA hockey?

If you’re a fan of that match-up in either the men’s or women’s leagues, you should be plenty happy this week as those universities could meet as many as six times in playoff action.

The Gryphs and Badgers are paired together in both the men’s league West Division semifinals (effectively the league quarter-finals) and the women’s league quarter-finals. Both are best-of-three series.

The women are to start the action as they’re to play the opening game of their series Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphons Centre. Game two is set for Saturday at 2:15 p.m. at St. Catharines and the third game, if it’s needed, is to go Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs and Badgers split their regular-season games this season, both winning 1-0 on home ice. Brock won at St. Catharines Nov. 18 and the Guelph won at the Gryphon Centre Feb. 1.

The men are to begin their series Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre. Game 2 is slated for Saturday at 7:15 p.m. at St. Catharines and if the third game is necessary, it’s to be played Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs finished atop the West Division standings at 21-6-1 while Brock was fifth at 14-9-5. Guelph disposed of the eighth-place Windsor Lancers in three games in the divisional quarter-final while Brock swept the fourth-place Laurier Golden Hawks in two games.

Including the preseason Steel Blade Classic won by the Gryphs during Brock’s Homecoming, Guelph and Brock played five times this season – four times at St. Catharines — and the Gryphs won four of those games. The loss was by a 3-1 score at St. Catharines Jan. 19 while Guelph won 5-3 Sept. 15, 3-2 in the regular-season opener at home Oct. 11, 4-2 on Nov. 18 and 2-1 on Jan. 6.
