Joanna Brown claims bronze, Jamnicky 14th in triathlon

GOLD COAST, Australia – University of Guelph student Joanna Brown captured Canada’s first medal at the Commonwealth Games Friday when she claimed bronze in the women’s triathlon.

Brown, who has put her Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing Management studies on hold to pursue her triathlon goals, had the fastest time in the run as she finished third overall with a time of 57 minutes and 38 seconds.

Brown was 48 seconds behind the winner, Flora Duffy of Bermuda, and five seconds behind silver medalist Jessica Learmonth of England.

Fellow U of G student Dominika Jamnicky, who’s a member of the Guelph Triathlon Project, was 14th in 1:01:08.

Both Brown and Jamnicky are 25, their birthdays three days apart in November.
