Jr. Gryphs major bantam girls Ontario Cup silver medalists

BRAMPTON—The Guelph GYBA Vett Junior Gryphons finished as silver medalists in Division 3 of Basketball Ontario’s provincial championship Ontario Cup bantam girls’ tournament.

The Junior Gryphs finished pool play atop their pool with a 2-1 record as they defeated Wildhawk Basketball 28-25 and St. Catharines CYO 35-23 after opening with a 33-24 loss to Etobicoke One.

The locals were edged 30-26 by Kingston Impact Reynolds in the gold-medal game.

The Guelph CYO Knights finished sixth in Division 7. They had a win and two losses in pool play as they slipped by MUMBA Basketball 26-22 and lost 22-20 to the Orangeville Hawks and 39-28 to East Elgin.

The Knights were nipped 34-30 by South Simcoe in the fifth-place game.


Bantam Girls

NIAGARA – The Junior Gryphs finished eighth in Division 3.

The locals suffered three setbacks in pool play as they lost 39-29 to the Inter-City Saints, 65-47 to Pelham Kilyk and 42-50 to the London Ramblers.

The Guelph side was defeated 50-42 by Etobicoke in the seventh-place game.

The Centre Wellington Celtics were eighth in Division 8.

The Celtics dropped three matches in pool play as they were downed 39-7 by the Milton Stags, 41-3 by Wallaceburg and 40-1 by the Stoney Creek Storm.

Centre Wellington was handed a 52-9 setback by the Whitby Wildcats in the seventh-place match.
