Junior Gryphons drop EHG in OHL Cup opener

TORONTO – The Guelph Junior Gryphons scored three times in the third period to claim a 5-2 victory over New York’s Elite Hockey Group in OHL Cup minor midget AAA hockey tournament play Wednesday.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and Guelph led 2-1 at the end of the second.

After EHG scored the first goal of the game, the Junior Gryphs connected four four in a row to take control.

Brody Waters scored twice for the Junior Gryphs while single goals were added by Brett Allen, Ryan Goetz and Logan Morrison. Picking up one assist apiece were Jakson Kirk, Owen O’Donnell, Zachary Hatch, Isiah Katsube, Cameron Angst and Andrew Britton.

Anthony Califore and Isaak Novak scored for EHG while Nate Hanley, Michael Cameron and Luke Antonacci each had one assist.

Christian Linton was the winning goalie for Guelph as he made 30 saves. Liam O’Gwen made 23 saves as he took the loss in net for EHG.

The Junior Storm went 3-for-6 on its power play while EHG went 1-for-4.

While the game was the first of the tournament for the Junior Storm, it was EHG’s second as they lost 6-5 to the Toronto Marlboros Tuesday night.

The Junior Storm and Marlboros are to play Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
