Junior Gryphons edged by Cambridge at OHL Cup
TORONTO – A goal with just over a minute and a half to go in the second period proved to be the winner as the Guelph Junior Gryphons were edged 2-1 by the Cambridge Hawks in OHL Cup minor midget AAA hockey tournament play Thursday at the Scotiabank Pond.
The teams had scored a goal apiece in the first period while the third was scoreless.
Brett Allen scored the lone goal for the Junior Gryphs while Logan Morrison and Jakson Kirk had assists.
Cooper Walker and Tyler Healey hit for a goal apiece for Cambridge while assists were awarded to Niah Kirk, Joseph Serpa and Dante Pellegrino.
Christian Linton took the loss in net for the Junior Gryphs despite making 28 saves. Vance Meyer collected the win from Cambridge with 21 saves.
The Junior Gryphs went 1-for-10 on their power play while Cambridge was scoreless on five power plays.
The result leaves the Junior Gryphs at 1-2-0 in the Nash Division and Cambridge at 2-1-0.
The Junior Gryphs are to complete their preliminary round with a game against the Sun County Panthers Friday at 10:15 a.m.
