Junior Gryphons edged twice in bantam tournament

GUELPH – The Guelph Junior Gryphons suffered a pair of setbacks Friday in the opening day of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association’s bantam AAA championship tournament at the Gryphon Centre.

The Junior Gryphs were edged 3-2 by the Halton Hurricanes and 4-2 by the North Central Predators.

The Hurricanes were the lone team to win both of their Friday games in the five-team tournament as they also dropped the Hamilton Junior Bulldogs 6-1.

Whitby Wildcats and North Central each had a win and a tie. Whitby downed Hamilton 8-2 and tied North Central 2-2.

Round-robin play is to continue Saturday. The Junior Gryphs are to play Whitby at 2:30 p.m. and Hamilton at 7:30 p.m.

Halton and Whitby are to clash at 9:30 a.m. while Hamilton is to battle North Central at 11:30 a.m. and North Central and Halton are to play at 4:30 p.m.

The medal games are set for Sunday. The third- and fourth-placed teams are to meet in the bronze-medal game at 9:30 a.m. and the first- and second-placed teams are to battle in the gold-medal match at 12 p.m.
