Junior Gryphons in OWHA intermediate A semifinals

REXDALE – The Guelph Junior Gryphons gained a berth in the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association’s intermediate A provincial championship tournament’s semifinals with a 3-0 win over the Peterborough Ice Kats in the quarter-finals Saturday night at Westwood Arena.

The Junior Gryphs had finished second in their pool with a 2-1-0 record in the preliminary round.

If the Guelph side gave up a goal, they lost as all three of their victories in the first two days of the three-day event were by shutouts.

They opened the tournament with a 4-0 win over the Durham West Lightning Friday before falling 5-1 to the St. Catharines Brock Junior Badgers later in the day.

Saturday, the Junior Gryphs wrapped up the preliminary round with a 2-0 win over the Clearview Icecats.

Guelph is to play the Saugeen-Maitland Lightning in a semifinal Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

Saugeen-Maitland finished second in its pool before edging the Mississauga Chiefs 1-0 in the quarter-finals.

Sunday’s other semifinal pits the Brampton Canadettes against the Whitby Wolves. Brampton defeated the Cambridge Roadrunners 3-2 in the quarter-finals while Whitby slipped by St. Catharines 2-1.

Semifinal winners are to meet in the gold-medal match Sunday at 2 p.m. at Westwood Arena.
