Junior Gryphons medalists in league championship tourney

TORONTO – Guelph Girls’ Hockey Association Junior Gryphons teams came away from the weekend’s Lower Lakes Female Hockey League’s championship tournament with silver and bronze medals.

The Junior Gryphs were awarded silver medals in intermediate A following a 3-1 loss to the St. Catharines Brock Junior Badgers in Sunday’s gold-medal match. The Junior Gryphs opened the tournament with a 3-0 loss to St. Catharines, but bounced back by beating the Whitby Wolves 3-1 and Etobicoke Dolphins 2-0 to advance to the division final.

The Junior Gryphs claimed bronze medals in novice B with a 2-1 victory over the Barrie Sharks Sunday in the bronze-medal game. The Guelph squad had opened the tournament with a win over Barrie by the exact same score before they suffered a 3-1 loss to the Peterborough Ice Kats and a 4-1 setback to the eventual champion Huron Heat.

The Grand River Mustangs placed fourth in atom BB as they were defeated 2-0 by the Sarnia Lady Sting in the bronze-medal match. The Mustangs had dropped three close games in round-robin play as they were beaten 3-1 by Sarnia, 2-1 by the Whitby Wolves and 2-0 by the Mississauga Chiefs.

The Mount Forest Rams captured the championship in peewee C as they edged the Walkerton Capitals 1-0 in the gold-medal game. In round-robin play, the Rams downed the Peterborough Ice Kats 4-1, Walkerton 1-0 and the Bancroft Jets 2-0.
