Junior Gryphons to battle for bantam AAA bronze

AURORA – The Guelph Junior Gryphons are to play for bronze Sunday at the Ontario Minor Hockey Association’s bantam AAA championship tournament at St. Andrew’s College.

The Junior Gryphs finished round-robin play in a three-way tie for second with the Southern Tier Admirals and Ajax-Pickering Raiders with 1-1-2 records. The tie-breaking format left Southern Tier second, Guelph third and Ajax-Pickering fourth.

Quinte Red Devils finished atop the group at 2-1-1 and host York-Simcoe Express was fifth at 1-2-1.

Top four move on to Sunday’s medal game with Quinte and Southern Tier to play for gold and the Junior Gryphs and Ajax-Pickering to battle for bronze.

In round-robin play, the locals tied Ajax-Pickering 2-2, defeated York-Simcoe 5-2, lost 8-2 to Quinte and tied Southern Tier 1-1.

Minor Bantam AA

The Junior Gryphs can claim the OMHA title Sunday afternoon with a win over the Barrie Junior Colts at the Gryphon Centre.

Guelph grabbed a 4-2 lead in the six-point final with a 2-1 victory Saturday at Barrie’s Allandale Recreation Centre.

All three games played in the series so far have been won by the visiting squad as Guelph won 4-0 at Barrie’s Holly Recreation Centre March 16 and Barrie won 3-2 at the West End arena March 17.

The Junior Gryphs are looking for their first title win in the category as this is the first time a Guelph Minor Hockey Association team has reached the minor bantam AA final. Barrie has won it five times, including back-to-back wins in 2015 and 2016.

The Junior Colts won the OMHA peewee AA championship last year.

Game time Sunday is 3:30 p.m.
