Junior Gryphs JVs downed by Essex

WINDSOR – The Guelph Junior Gryphons were handed a 42-8 setback by the Essex Ravens in Ontario Provincial Junior Football League Premier Junior Varsity play Saturday at the University of Windsor.

The loss was the third in as many outings for the Junior Gryphs.

Jacob Lipke hit Ethan Bizjak with a touchdown pass for Guelph’s lone TD of the game. Lipke completed three of six pass attempts for 124 yards. He was intercepted once. Peyton Garvin completed three of nine attempts for 30 yards and he was also intercepted once.

Bizjak caught two passes for 136 yards while Johnathon Wegman caught two passes for 18 yards.

Gabe Tersigni had two rushes for 12 yards while Lipke and Caleb Spurgeon each had two rushes for 10 yards, Gabe Valedis had six rushes for nine yards and Garvin had four rushes for five yards.

Enzo Njo had a punt return for 20 yards and two kickoff returns for 40 yards. Tersigni returned two kickoffs for 19 yards, Logan Clyde returned one for eight yards and Tristan Dahl returned one for one yard. Andrew Newbigging also had a punt return.

Sam Taylor had five punts for 132 yards.

Defensively, Newbigging had six tackles while Njo and Jacob Henning each had five.

The win lifted Essex to 2-1-0.

The Junior Gryphs are to host the Kingston Grenadiers (0-3-0) Saturday at Alumni Stadium. Game time is 3 p.m.
