Junior Gryphs nipped by Sun County at OHL Cup

TORONTO – The Guelph Junior Gryphons were ousted from the OHL Cup minor midget AAA hockey tournament Friday when they were edged 6-5 by the Sun County Panthers.

That loss left the Junior Gryphs at 1-3-0 in pool play and they did not qualify for the quarter-finals.

Three consecutive goals gave the Junior Gryphs a 4-2 lead in the second period, but Sun County responded with three of their own to go up 5-4 midway through the third. Guelph tied it with 2:15 to go before Sun County netted the winner with 59 seconds to go.

Jakson Kirk and Logan Morrison each had two goals for the Junior Gryphons while Joseph Marra scored the other goal. Brody Waters and Owen O’Donnell collected two assists apiece while Caden Bower, Kirk, Andrew Britton, Isiah Katsube and Zachary Tofflemire each had one assist.

Conor Dembinski scored twice for Sun County while Zane Dalpe, Liam Hall, Braedan Caetano and John Ulicny added single goals. Brendan Kennette had two assists and Dalpe, Aleksa Babic, Ulicny, Alex Demers, Mathew Maggio and Ryan Gagnier had one each.

Sun County outshot the Junior Gryphs 34-32. Guelph went 3-for-8 on its power play while Sun County went 1-for-7.

Hayden Dunford took the loss in net for the Junior Gryphs while Nicholas Chenard had the win for Sun County.

Toronto Marlboros finished atop the Nash Division at 4-0-0 while Sun County and Cambridge Hawks finished at 2-2-0 and the Junior Gryphs and New York EHG finished at 1-3-0.

The Marlies and Sun County advanced to Saturday’s quarter-finals.
