Junior Gryphs’ OHL Cup play-in game Tuesday afternoon
GUELPH – The Guelph Junior Gryphons will play either the London Junior Knights or the Waterloo Wolves in their OHL Cup play-in game Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Toronto’s Scotiabank Pond.
The Junior Gryphs were awarded a position in a play-in game after finishing fifth in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association’s AAA minor midget championship tournament. The other four in that tournament all received berths in the regular part of the OHL Cup tournament.
The Junior Gryphs will play the loser of a four-point Alliance Hockey series between London and Waterloo. That series is tied 2-2 after London won 4-2 Thursday night. Next game is set for Sunday at Waterloo.
Winner of that series is to play the Mississauga Rebels in a play-in game Tuesday at 4 p.m.
The other two play-in games Tuesday pit the North Central Predators against the Mississauga Senators at 10 a.m. and the North York Rangers against the Niagara North Stars at 12 p.m.
If the Junior Gryphs win their play-in game, they’ll join the regular portion of the tournament in the Shanahan Division and play the Toronto Marlboros Wednesday at 12:30 p.m., Detroit Compuware Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., Thunder Bay Kings Thursday at 12:30 p.m. and Quinte Red Devils Friday at 12 p.m.
Other teams in the tournament include the Brantford 99’ers, Detroit Little Caesars, Don Mills Flyers, Halton Hurricanes, Kitchener Junior Rangers, Team Northern Ontario, Toronto Nationals, Toronto Red Wings, U.S. TPH, Whitby Wildcats, Windsor Junior Spitfires and York Simcoe Express.
Round-robin play goes Tuesday through Friday. Top two in each division advance to March 16’s quarter-finals while the semifinals are also slated for that day. The championship game is to be held March 18 at 7 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. It’s the lone game not to be played at Scotiabank Pond.
