JV Junior Gryphons edged by Kingston
GUELPH – The Guelph Junior Gryphons suffered an 18-0 loss to the Kingston Grenadiers in Ontario Provincial Junior Football League Junior Varsity play Saturday at Alumni Stadium.
The Grenadiers struck for a touchdown in the first quarter and added three points in the second quarter and two in the third on their way to their first win of the season in the tightly-fought game.
Jacob Lipke completed four of 15 pass attempts for 17 yards for the Junior Gryphs while Peyton Garvin completed two of six attempts for 35 yards. Both threw an interception.
Johnathon Wegman caught three passes for 22 yards while Gabe Valedis, Max Nixon and Caleb Spurgeon each caught one pass.
The Junior Gryphons had seven rushing attempts in the game – one each by Garvin, Ethan Bizjak, Enzo Njo, Spurgeon, Wegman and Valedis.
Njo had five punt returns for 39 yards and three kickoff returns for 145 yards. Logan Clyde had two punt returns for 12 yards and Codi Smith had one punt return for one yard. Spurgeon had a kickoff return for 10 yards and Wegman also had a kickoff return.
Bizjak had four punts for 87 yards.
Defensively, Andrew Newbigging and Clyde each had six tackles while Kyle Ilczyna had five and Njo had four. Clyde and Smith each had a sack.
The result leaves Kingston at 1-3-0 and Guelph at 0-4-0.
The Junior Gryphs are to host the London Junior Mustangs (3-1-0) Saturday at 2 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
