Kitchener rallies to hand Canes another loss

GUELPH – The Guelph Hurricanes gave up the final three goals of the game as they suffered a 4-2 loss to the Kitchener Dutchmen in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Sunday afternoon at the Sleeman Centre.

The Canes had led 2-1 at the end of the first period before Kitchener tied it with the only goal of the second and the Dutchmen handed the Canes their fifth consecutive loss with two goals in the third.

Ryan George and Tyler Harrison scored goals 42 seconds apart in the first period for Guelph while assists were awarded to Ryan Sparkes, Nicholas Bird, Bradley Smith and Ryan George.

Kole Scott, Blair Derynck, Jake Burton and Liam Hurley scored once apiece for the Dutchmen. Ben Morris, Sean Kawalec, Hurley, Austin Gaboury, Lucas Theriault, Mark Cooper and Carter Lennon each had one assist.

The Canes outshot Kitchener 32-29 and went 1-for-7 on their power play while Kitchener was scoreless on three power plays.

Jet Greaves was tagged for the loss in net for the Canes while Riley Daniels picked up the win in the Kitchener net.

The result leaves the Canes at 6-7-1-2 and Kitchener at 6-7-0-2.

The next four games for the Canes are against the teams in the top two in the Midwestern Conference. They’re to play the second-place Stratford Warriors (11-2-0-0) at Stratford’s Allman Arena Friday at 7:30 p.m. before hosting the division-leading Listowel Cyclones (12-3-0-0) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the first of four consecutive games at the Sleeman Centre. The Canes are to host Stratford Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. and host the third-place Waterloo Siskins (8-4-0-1) Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m.
