Kitchener scores first five on way to win over Hurricanes

GUELPH – The Guelph Hurricanes yielded the first five goals of the game as they were tripled 6-2 by the Kitchener Dutchmen in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The loss was the eighth consecutive setback for the Canes.

Kitchener led 3-0 at the end of the first period and 5-1 after the second.

Braydon Munn and Adel Zivojevic had a goal apiece for the Canes while assists went to Graham Evans, Kevin Gergely, Kyle Somani and Lyam Cripps.

Logan Schmidt, Brendan Valko, Connor Cole, Austin Gaboury, Aiden Matekovic and Adam Kawalec scored the goals for Kitchener.

The Dutchmen outshot the Canes 46-23 including a 17-4 advantage in the opening period.

Both teams had a power-play goal, Kitchener on three power plays and Guelph on eight.

Nick Redman took the loss in the Guelph net while Riley Daniels picked up the win for Kitchener.

The Canes are seventh in the Midwestern Conference at 13-29-2-1 and can finish no higher than seventh. The Brampton Bombers are eighth at 10-28-2-5 and Brantford 99ers ninth at 8-31-2-4. Top eight qualify for the playoffs.

The Canes have five games to go in their regular season and are to host the sixth-place Stratford Warriors (21-9-0-3) Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
