Kotsopoulos grabs Gryphon record in victory over McMaster

GUELPH – Jace Kotsopoulos wasn’t about to leave Sunday’s game without owning the Guelph Gryphons’ all-time career scoring record.

Kotsopoulos scored a pair of second-half goals to lift the Gryphs to a 2-0 victory over the McMaster Marauders in OUA men’s soccer league play at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. The goals give fourth-year Gryphon Kotsolpoulos 49 in a Guelph uniform – 47 in regular-season play and two in the playoffs. That’s one more than Robbie Murphy scored in five seasons with the Gryphs.

Kotsopoulos headed home the game’s opening goal in the 75th minute then added the other one six minutes later with a shot that just found its way inside the opposite post. Johnson Amoo set up the second tally.

Despite some pressure from the Marauders, they didn’t manage any shots. Ryan Collins picked up his second clean sheet of the season for the Gryphs. His teammates took 11 shots with five of them reaching the net.

The Gryphs are second in the West Division at 4-1-1, trailing only the York Lions (4-0-2).

The loss was the first of the season for the Marauders who are fourth in the division at 3-1-2.

The Gryphs are to host the Algoma Thunderbirds (0-4-0) twice at the Gryphon Soccer Complex next weekend. They’re to play Saturday at 3:15 p.m. and Sunday at 2:15 p.m.
