Lacrosse Gryphs run to win over Laurier
GUELPH – An eight-goal spree helped the Guelph Gryphons down the Laurier Golden Hawks 17-4 in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association play Wednesday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
The Gryphs trailed 2-1 with a minute and a half to go in the first quarter when they started their run of eight consecutive goals. Those goals pushed the hosts into a 9-2 lead one minute into the third quarter and the Gryphs responded to Laurier’s third goal of the game with another five goals in a row.
Guelph led 5-2 at the end of the first quarter, 8-2 at halftime and 14-3 at the end of the third quarter.
The Gryphs had five power-play goals to two for Laurier and they outshot the Golden Hawks 36-16.
Alec Simons led the Gryphs with four goals and two assists while Liam Corbett had a hat trick. Getting two goals apiece were Michael Cavanagh, Mitchell Ogilvie and Ben Azzopardi while single goals were added by Jackson Nishimura, James Short, Brandon Tanacs and Cameron MacLeod. Short also had five assists while Ogilvie, Corbett, Hayden Coulman, Quenton Begin and Matthew Sykes had one apiece.
Lourdes graduate Hayden Welsh had two goals and an assist for Laurier while Chris Van Ooteghem also scored twice and Andy Borgatti and Mike Dowell each had one assist.
The Gryphs move to 5-3 with the win while Laurier drops to 1-6.
The Guelph squad has four games remaining on its regular-season schedule starting with a game Oct. 13 against the McMaster Marauders (0-7) at Hamilton.
