Lacrosse Gryphs start CUFLA season with win
WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons struck for seven consecutive goals in the first half on their way to a 14-5 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks in their Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association season opener Saturday at Laurier’s Alumni Field.
The Gryphs led 3-1 after the first period, 8-2 at halftime and 12-3 after the third quarter.
Liam Corbett and Mike Berger each had a hat trick for the Gryphs while Michael Cavanagh and Colin Walker netted two goals apiece. Single goals were added by James Short, Quenton Begin, Joshua Toguri and Micthell Ogilvie. Short and Jackson Nishimura had three assists apiece while Cavanagh had two assists and Walker and Hayden Coulman had one each.
Andy Borgatti had two goals for Laurier while Hyatt Welsh, Chris Van Ooteghem and Connor Bartlett also scored. Getting one assist each were Borgatti, Welsh and Reid Simmons.
Hayden Walsh picked up the win for Guelph as he yielded three goals in three quarters and Cameron MacLeod gave up two goals in the final quarter.
Laurier switched between Dylan Carr-Mathews and Sam Stewart in the game. Carr Matthews surrendered two goals in 25 minutes and Stewart gave up 12 in 55 minutes.
The Gryphs are to host the Western Mustangs Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Western downed the McMaster Marauders 15-4 in their season opener Friday night.
